The Psychotropic Hobbit
They say we are who we will be by the age of seven, so maybe the books of Dr Seuss have a lot to answer for. But for a dyslexic misfit, those books were a gateway into another world brought to life by the fantasy illustrations of Arthur Rackham, Brian Froud, Roger Dean and Patrick Woodroffe, along with many others. Now, like many of us, it could be said that I live in the shire of my mind, where the air is sweet, and adventure is just a heartbeat away. And though this may be a world of dreams, occasionally, as with the Psychotropic Hobbit, I’m lucky enough to, on occasion, bring something of my dreams back into reality.
The deeply blasted briar with its petaled pink mouth and the worn and beaten spine of bamboo that runs up to the stem's colourful imagination tell the human story of our fragility, struggles, dreams and eventual acceptance.
It is made from Italian briar with a deep blast and warm natural finish. The rim is lightly stained with a hint of pink, reflecting the pink in the stem. The bamboo shank has a stainless steel reverse tenon with bands of Japanese green swirl ebonite and Tiffany Casein. The buds are made from English boxwood and have been carefully sized and fitted for that organic look.
The Kandinsky-ish psychedelic stem, which has a Delrin-lined mortise, is made from Anton Wewecz's enchanting handmade vulcanite whose vivid, swirling colours give rise to the name, the psychotropic hobbit.
Please note the photos were taken outside in the cold November morning light, and the colours may look different in other settings.
