The Dandy: A black blasted Strawberry
This pipe design stems from its eye-catching centrepiece, a lampwork glass bead by Bianca Grubber. The bead’s multifaceted and fanciful aesthetic transported me to the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley and his connection to Oscar Wild igniting the idea of ‘The Dandy’.
The additional details in the pipe have been kept relatively simple and monochromatic, adding tactile and visual contrast while allowing the glass to shine.
The deep black blast is wonderfully tactile showing plenty of ring grain, and the stem design mimics the glass bead.
At 34 grams, it’s a light, compact and clench-able pipe. The chamber is a conical drill with a wall thickness ranging from 10mm at the widest point to 5mm at the bottom.
It is made from Mimmo Italian briar, with a stainless steel reinforcing tube that also acts as the reverse tenon. The glass bead is handmade by biancagruberglass and is bedded into place using two ebonite rings, a little polymer clay and UV resin, with a faux cobalt ring between the bead and briar bowl. The stem is SEM limited edition Winter ebonite with a Delrin-lined mortise.
